FAQ

Where is Camp Up with People?

Camp Up with People is located in the beautiful, historical Shenandoah Valley about 5 minutes north of Harrisonburg, Virginia, and just two hours southwest of Washington, DC. Our camp site is called Horizons at Valley Pike: www.horizonsvalleypike.com. The address is:

297 Cornerstone Lane
Harrisonburg, VA 22802

Where do campers come from?

Campers come from all over the United States and many countries around world. In fact, over 50% of our campers come from outside the U.S. Camp UWP does not have a religious affiliation. We welcome campers from all walks of life and backgrounds.

What is the weather like?

The temperature is usually in the 80’s during the day and in the 60’s at night. We occasionally get rain, but for the most part the weather is sunny and pleasant. Evenings sometimes require a sweatshirt and jeans.

Can my camper stay more than one session?

Though the 3-week sessions are the same, you can attend both sessions. There is a small discount if you attend both. See Dates/Fees for more information.

What is the ratio of staff to campers?

There is one counselor per 5-7 campers. The counselor-to-camper ratio may vary during different activities, but should not exceed one counselor for every six campers.

What are the dorms like?

The dorm rooms have 2 bunk beds in each, and each dorm room shares a common bathroom with another 4-person dorm room. The dorm has electricity, and is air-conditioned. The boys and girls are in separate sections of the same dorm.

My camper is coming with a friend. Can they share a dorm room?

Campers can make dorm-mate requests, and we will do our best to honor those requests as long as the campers are of the same gender and both make the request. We typically switch dorm-mates half-way through the session, to give everyone the opportunity to get to know more people.

How are activities planned and scheduled?

Most of the activities during the 3-week session are planned in advance. However, the schedule will change depending upon weather and the interests of the campers and their desire to complete all they hope to accomplish.

What if my child misses home?

Our counselors are trained to help campers who are missing home cope with their feelings. Program Directors will call you if your child is missing home for more than a day, and will update you on your child’s progress. We will schedule a time during each weekend for the campers to communicate to home, but not at other times during the week. We’ve found that homesickness calls often don’t help the situation and can make missing home worse. Most homesickness goes away in the first three days, as they establish their “new normal”.

What kind of medical coverage do you have?

Camp has first-aid trained staff on site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Camp Horizons, 9 miles away, has medical staff living at the Camp, which is important, because this is where the majority of our outdoor activities will take place. Also, Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg is 10 minutes away and camp has 911 emergency services available.

Will my camper’s laundry be washed?

Campers’ laundry will be washed twice….at the beginning of the second and third weeks. All campers must bring their own laundry bag with their name on it, and clearly label all belongings.
